Transparent Burnet: a few (5+) between Haunn and Treshnish cottages, 80 counted in 30 minutes in a small area above cliffs at Port Haunn
Six-spot Burnet moth: 25 counted in 30 minutes above cliffs at Port Haunn. 3 photographed between Treshnish and Haunn cottages were thought to be Slender Scotch Burnet moth. Argyll’s Special Butterflies & Moths’ pamphlet of Butterfly Conservation Scotland states ‘Only species in Argyll with 5 spots on each forewing. Outer spot comprised of 2 fused spots.’ But according to ‘Field guide to the Moths of Great Britain and Ireland’ by Waring, Townsend & Lewington, Six-spot Burnet also sometimes has the merged outer spot. In this case Six-spot can be eliminated by its ‘larger size, more thickly scaled forewing, less hairy body and legs outwardly black’ (Slender Scotch has ‘forelegs yellowish brown in part’ and also a ‘very narrow black border to the hindwing’; according to my photos Six-spot has a broad black border).
Using these diagnostic features the borderline individuals at Treshnish appear to be Six-spot Burnet

Overview 10-16 July
Goosander, female Hen Harrier and Lesser Redpoll, (my first Treshnish records) and Grey Wagtail (unrecorded for six weeks), were seen this week. Cormorant is now fairly common along the coast at Treshnish Farm. My second Mull record of Little Grebe was seen on July 10th at Mishnish Lochs, the first being on February 28th at Tobermory. These records are probably due to post-breeding dispersal.
Between 1-14 July BF & FF, whilst staying at Haunn, saw a male Hen Harrier ‘on a few occasions flying along the base of the slope to the east of the track to the cottages. Always evenings.’ During this time they also saw a White-tailed Eagle ‘just beyond west cottage, looking towards the headland over the cliffs. We saw it quite close on a couple of occasions as we sat out of sight under the rock outcrops’ and between 1-7 July a Great Skua ‘around the shore directly below the cottages and moved off to the Treshnish islands,’ and between 1-14 July Arctic Tern and Golden Eagle were recorded at Treshnish Farm.

Overview May 29-June 4
The occasional tern may now be seen along the shoreline. Large congregations of Kittiwake were at Caliach Point exploiting a food source. The Dunlin on the 31st were incredibly tame allowing approach up to 3 metres. The Arctic Tern observed flying and calling with a fish towards south Coll was interesting. The only explanation that I can come up with is that it was flying to the Treshnish Isles and was taking a wide curve far out around Treshnish Point. Arctic Terns eggs generally begin to hatch in mid June (earliest beginning of June) and Common Terns generally begin to hatch after the first week of June (earliest beginning of June). Perhaps I have misidentified this bird as an Arctic Tern (instead of Common). Another possibility is that it was a gift to its mate. Arctic Terns generally begin to lay after the third week of May (earliest after first week of May), Common Terns generally begin to lay after the second week of May (earliest after first week of May).
The White-tailed Eagle seen at Treshnish farm on the 29th is probably one of the Loch Frisa adults. At mid day one of the Loch Frisa adults was seen on the ridge between Dervaig and Loch Frisa (the pair had been observed by others flying from Loch Frisa to this ridge), by 12 noon only one was over the ridge. It seems very likely that the White-tailed Eagle seen at Treshnish at about 12.30 was one of these birds. On May 16th one of the Loch Frisa adults was most probably the White-tailed Eagle observed carrying food at Treshnish farm and flying to the north-east and interestingly it was at about the same time, noon. There have been several seabird kills along the cliffs at Treshnish Point and at least 2 pellets have been found there: it appears that the eagles regularly hunt successfully at the Point.
The Reed Bunting female has been observed with a male and are presumably breeding.
The Fulmars at Treshnish Point have not all laid their eggs and although some appear to have, none have definitely.
By now fledged juveniles of Song Thrush, Robin, Stonechat and probably Northern Wheatear have been seen at Treshnish farm and unfledged Shag and Starling have been observed.

I have no moth experience at all but it was obviously a burnet and I wrote down that it had 5 red spots the outermost of which was a double spot. Only the habitat makes me doubtful. ‘This is the rarest Burnet moth in Argyll and is only found in a handful of sites on Mull and Ulva,’ (Argyll’s Special Butterflies & Moths’ pamphlet of Butterfly Conservation Scotland),’
[Northern Eggar moth: 2 disturbed in daylight at Langamull were only seen briefly but thought to be this species]

Fulmar: many were seen flying around the cliffs on the south side of Treshnish Point but within half an hour they had disappeared and on further investigation there were very few occupying territories (although not all areas were searched), only 5 birds were sitting. Perhaps they were taking advantage of the fine weather after the heavy rains earlier in the day. One bird, which was thought at first to be sitting on eggs, flew off to show there were none.

Overview May 1-7
Local migrants Twite and Linnet have now arrived and are seen regularly.
Summer migrants: Whinchat, Spotted Flycatcher, Sedge Warbler, Common Whitethroat, Chiffchaff, Common and Arctic Tern have all been seen for the first time this week. A single Swift was also seen but this was presumably on passage (it is not known to breed on Mull) and the House Martin was also only seen once. Common and Arctic Tern were seen on one day only (per species)
The Meadow Pipit flocks were not seen later in the week. Lesser Black-backed Gull is now seen regularly and no further comments are necessary unless the status changes. Curlew is rarely seen now and Cormorant has also become more scarce and Common Sandpiper has not been seen for a few days but presumably is still present. The Shelduck seen along the coast at Treshnish Farm may be preparing to breed.

Overview May 8-14
Common Whitethroat is now indeed common on the Farm but Whinchat, Chiffchaff, Common and Arctic Tern have not been seen this week. Sedge Warbler and Spotted Flycatcher have only been seen twice this week; the former below Toechtamhor and the latter near the graveyard.
Reed Bunting was seen again after an absence of 6 weeks. The Turtle Dove was presumably on passage, as was the Whimbrel. Sand Martin is also unlikely to breed on Treshnish Farm and was most probably passing through.
There are still two male Goldeneye at Mishnish Lochs, breeding?

It flew to Calgary Bay to pick up a thermal and then flew eastwards at 12.20; perhaps heading to Loch Frisa. At 13.10 an adult returned with food to the Loch Frisa nest (DS), so presumably this was the same bird. Presumably this is also the same bird logged by IC & HC on the same day at Treshnish Farm

[Long-tailed Skua: 1 far off flying north, a probable skua with visible long 'tail' visible at about 2km range, flew over and was joined by a second bird but too far off now to see tail. The first impression was a large bird, 'Heron with pointed wings' was my first thought. Flew straight with steady wing-beats with occasional glides. No 'shearing' observed]

Shelduck, Common Ringed Plover and Herring Gull, look to be holding territories. The female Reed Bunting appears to be without a mate and although Red Grouse were only seen individually, they are probably breeding on Treshnish Farm. Curlew and Buzzard may also be breeding although again there are no definite pairs. The male Hen Harrier seen as late as the 19th gives reason to believe that there is a pair breeding nearby. The Whimbrel was on passage. Great Northern Diver are still present although they should be departing soon. Mishnish Lochs were not visited this week so no news on the Goldeneye there.

Overview May 22-28
Breeding continuous as last week and the Fulmars are still present. Snipe have not been heard calling recently but are still heard drumming. There have been no records of Great Northern Diver since the 21st so presumably they have all migrated north soon after that date. Kittiwakes have been seen more recently close into shore and in large numbers, this has not been seen since May 3rd, perhaps they are breeding close by. The Lapwing records of singles on 14th and 27th of May are presumably from some nearby territory.
